Built in 1926, class OE-1 boxcab #50 was the first diesel locomotive on the Reading system and the second in the United States. The first was sister unit #1000 on the Central Railroad of New Jersey, of which Reading owned 49%. #1000 has been preserved at the B&O Railroad Museum in Baltimore. #51 was classed OE-2 and was built in 1928. For nine years, these units would be the only diesels on the Reading.

The class came from Oil Electric, 1 from first type of locomotive, 2 from second type of locomotive. Both #50 and 51 were built by a consortium of Alco, General Electric, and Ingersoll Rand. They were renumbered #98 and 99 in 1940 to make room on the roster for the arriving S1's. These boxcabs were ideal industrial switchers as they could negotiate tight radius curves due to their short wheelbase. They had rather long careers, as well. #50 was retired in 1949 after 23 years and #51 was retired in 1954 after 26 years. Unfortunately, both boxcabs were scrapped.
