Reading was the first railroad to purchase the Alco C430 in 1966. They were also the only C430's ever built with standard AAR trucks (recycled from RS3's) instead of hi-adhesion trucks. RDG 5211 received the name Catawissa II and RDG 5212 was named Old Ironsides II. Both were named to commemorate early steam locomotives. A traffic downfall sidelined many Reading Alcos including the C430's in 1975.
Conrail reactivated the C430's and assigned them CR 2048 and 2049. CR 2048 was retired in 1979 and 2049 in 1981. Both units were scrapped in 1981. CR 2049 was the only one of the two to be repainted into Conrail blue paint. CR 2048 remained in painted-out Reading Company colors until the end.
