History

The original Middletown and Hummelstown Railroad Company was a wholly owned subsidiary of the Philadelphia and Reading. Its primary purpose was to service local industries and to open a railroad link to the Susquehanna and Tidewater Canal, which had been acquired by P&R.

This line was not selected for inclusion in Conrail, and the modern Middletown and Hummelstown Railroad began freight operations in 1976. Tourist passenger service began in 1986, and is the primary source of revenue for the M&H today.
